THE DISLOYALTY
CHARGES:
will be remembered that *sometime ago there was a very Ambiguous telegramr about Ameri- can missionaries in Bulgaria'and Pornia being charged with dis- loyalty, Papers received by the -mail supply some more parti- culars, but nothing very definite. It was reported at Washington that an official investigation is being conducted to ascertain Whether two American mission- Aries who had served in Bulgaria under the American Board of Commissionaries
for Foreign
Missions, and. who returned to the United States during the war, were at that time in the pay of the Bulgarian Government, as has been alleged.
-----According to the allegations that have been made, these two missionaries carried their Bul-| garian propaganda so far that Dr. James L. Barton, secretary of the board and chairman of the Com- mittee for Relief in the Near East, wrote to these missionaries that they would have to desist or resign from the board. One is said to have resigned, and the other two have ceased engaging. in propaganda work.
At least 20 of the 25 American missionaries in Bulgaria are charged with having maintained à pro-German attitude during the war, it was learned from official sources.
It is understood that the American missionaries in Persia who are charged with political activities are not accused of any activities friendly to the enemy. It is alleged that they have attempted to interfere with the domestic affairs of Persia, and that their activities in this respect antedated the European war. These missionaries operate under the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions of New York, and it was indicated that their political" activities were limited practically to one section in north-west Persia. These missionaries are said to have leaned towards the Assyrians in controversies be- tween the latter and the Persians.
Only one missionary is involved in charges of disloyal activities brought to the attention of the American Board of Commis- sioners for Foreign Missions by the State Department at Washington, said Dr. William E Strong, secretary of the Editorial Department of the Board,' to a representative of the Christian Science Monitor who sought an Interview. "Regarding the dis- patch from Washington about. charges brought by the State Department as to the political activities of American Board missionaries, I am glad to state the exact facts, in, the case." said Dr. Strong.
