LEAVE AUSTRALIA FOR GERMANY.
There was no ostentation in the farewell of the first batch of Gar mans to leave Australia since the signing of the armistice.
As they stopped from the special trains with their baggage at Pyr mont May 27 all that met their gaze was a strong guard to prevent any attempt at escape and a large. [but curions crowd that had gathered on the approaches to the wharf and on Pyrmont Bridge.
The Germans looked sullenly at this gathering and picking up their tras, walked solemnly on to the steamer Willochra, in which they are to travel to their native country. On the steamier the Germans were welcomed by some hundreds of their country. men who had travelled from New Zealand.
qlonel Kindon, who had charge the arrangements, had carefully planned every detail, with the result that the embarka tion was carried out in an ex- peditious manner.
1
The men selected to complete the Willochra's complement were mostly war prisoners who had been sent here from other countries for safe-keeping, and had been confined at Holdsworthy camp. There were also several members of the crew of the war-

ARMY WASTE
LOSSES FROM. FRAUD AND NEGLIGENCE.
The British Army Appro priation Account for the year ended March 31st, 1918, shows that despite the transfer to other departments of charges for sea transport, aircraft, and disability pensions, there was a net increase in expenditure of over £138,000, 000, due to the growth of the Army, the large proportion of it actively employed in theatres of war and the continued rise in the cost of commodities and services. The total net deficit chargeable against the Vote of Credit was £725,817,869. 19s. 5d.
Balances irrecoverable and claims abandoned for the year represent a sum of £853,733 188, 7d, of which £47,135 12s. Md. was due to theft, fraud, arson, or gross negligence. Of this £33,807 represents hay lost through fire in a shed-used as a forage store. presumed to have been

Another fire at an amuni- tion dump cost £92,838, and was apparently caused by matches or cigarette ends thrown on a rub- bish heap in an adjoining billet. Aeroplanes and sheds lost in gales of exceptional severity account for £55,000.
