ITALIAN UNITY.

Rome, April Addressing the crowd at the station on his arrival- Signor Orlando, with tears in his eyes, said the demonstra- tions of the Italians in Paris and the popular demonstrations in Italy on his journey to Rome had proved that the Italian delegations had faithfully interpreted the will of the people. The situation was grave. Italy might be confronted with fresh and greater sacrifices and privation but Italy was greater than ever and was reads. Food supplies were failing, but Kaly which had known bunger had never known dishonour. "Perhaps we shall find ourselves alone, but Italy must be united and have a single will. Italy won't perish." The speech was puctuated with cheers for America and Italy, Down with Wilson" and cries of "We will face anything." General Diaz and Signor Barzilas also spoke and were imilarly acclaimed

The crowd dragged the automobile containing the delegates and Mayor to the Quirinal forcing a way with difficulty through masses of people. Flowers were thrown from windows. A group of British officers at one point shouted "Vive the Italian Army." The crowd responded "Live Britain." It took two hours to traverse the short distance to the Quirinal where meanwhile there were enthusiastic scenes. Their Majesties were repeatedly called to the balcony and reappeared when the automobile arrived. Signor Orlando and General Diaz standing up in the car' sulated, King Emmanuel responding. Signor Orlando and his companions went to the balcony. Chations continued at kogth. There were great demonstrations at Fiume, Trieste i and Bologna on Friday protesting against "the attempt to infringe Italy's right to Fiume and Dalmatia."

EGYPTIAN ASPIRATIONS.

Cairo, April 2

The effect of General Allenby's proclamation is im mediste. A great majority of Government employees have resumed to work this morning, ali mere sober thinking. The Egyptians feel that immoderation, whether in demands or agitation, will only lead to disappointment and disaster. The American recognition of the British protectorate has also acted is a cold douche to the extremists. That the country responsible for the doctrine of self- Ty decermination of peoples. which is 30 completely and calamitously misunderstood in these eastern lands, should take the lead in recognising Britain's position in Egypt has brought home with added force the futility of their ex- aggerated aspirations.

AND A CONCESSION.

Beuter learns that the Government is considering a proposal to send a special mission to Egypt with Lord Milner at its head to report to the Home Government on questions concerning the constitution of the profectorate. It is sot yet decided whether Lord Milner will go.

London, April 25. Labourite. Mr. Thomas, speaking The .. It was true we were committed to Italy by secret treaty behind the backs of the people, but we were living in a different age from 1916. Self determination must be respected. Just as Italy, France and America contributed to the destruction of militarism. they must find a solution to abolish war.
