INDIAN AND CEYLON TEAS.
A CASE AGAINST PREFERENCE.
London. April 17. In connection with the reports that the Treasury is considering the question of preference for India and Ceylon tea, the Times' trade, supplement points out that in 1917 India and Ceylon supplied to the United Kingdom $8 per cent. and China 6 per cent., and probably the demand for tea would exceed the supply during the next few years. Thus, the British-grown teas at present do not require Protection.
The feeling in Mineing Lane is that Protection will be dis advantageous, tending to deprive London of her pride of place as a re-exporting centre.
On the contrary, it is suggested that an extra duty may be levied on all teas shipped to the United Kingdom from ports other than the
