FACES WE SHALL MISS.
ABSENTEES FROM THE NEW PARLIAMENT.
Mr. Spencer Leigh Hughes, M.P., writes in the Daily Chronicle as follows:---
There can be no doubt at all ss to whose face will be most generally missed when the new House meets-it will certainly be that of Mr. Asquith. And in spite of all the differences of opinion that are inevitable in political warfare, I imagine that his absence will be regretted sincrely by all, for I doubt if, even" among those who have thought of late that it was well for him to be out of power, there was one who wished him to be out of the House.
To say that he was a great Parliamentary personality is an inadequate commonplace-he was a conspicuous figure in the great succession of those who have sustained the dignity, carri- ed on the traditions, and enriched the store of classie eloquence of Parliament. And when men look for him in vain on either of the two front beaches on one or the other of which he has had a place so long-they will also baj conscious of the absence of quite. a group of his chief supporters Runciman, McKenna, Herbert Samuel, Simon, MeKinnon Wood, and others.

It is not the case, however, a the men who are regarded in the House by their fellow members as almost nevessary and essential to the existence of Parliament are to be found on the front beaches. It will be difficult, for instance, to get accustomed to the absence of Mr. Dillon. He was a great Parliament man, nearly always in his place. He entered the House
1830 not in short of 10 years ago -3 tall, noticeable man, with coal- black hair and beard, and he has taken a leading part in its life until to-day he is white-haired and venerable in appearance, though in no way decrepit. There is something appropriate an characteristic in the fact that languages, that Mr. Hobes call such a man should go down fighting rather than avoid a contest by retiring, as soure of his friends did, for John Dillon was ever a fighter.
Among others who were technically private members one of the most interesting of the ab- sentees will be Mr. Pringle who has had more to say in the House than any other man during the last ten years, for when he was not directly addressing it he was generally keeping up a running commentary in a cheery conver ational style. In this his only rival was Mr. Hogge, who will mourn over him even as David
