218 New American Ships. With the completion of 23 ships in the first week of July it is announced that 213 new vessels, of an aggregate of 1.415.132 dead- weight tonnage, have, been built under the direction of the Ship ping, oard Of the new fleet 218 vessels are already in setual service.
New Director of Shipbuilding.
Mr. Charles Payne of Messrs, Harland and Wolf, Limited, has been appointed Director of.. Shipbuilding for admiralty National Yards Mr. Payne is a product of Messrs. Harland and Welff; having entered their service as junior draughtsman, and after passing through various grades of the yard was promoted to the position of managing. direct r of the shipbuilding yard. Members of the Grand Fleet- are now able to go shopping at sea without leaving their ships. A floating department store, fitted up by a biz London store under [special permit from the British Admiralty makes regular trips around the sea area where the Grand Fleet is stationed, display. ing its stock on deck and hand- ing purchases up over the sides of the ships. Mostly the store sells things to eat, canned meat, pickles, jam and cakes to vary. the monotonous diet of the fleet.
Collisions in the Inland Sea. The Taiyo-maru, a sailing- ship. with a cargo. of coal on board, collided with the Nichiun- maru. 2323 tons, off Harima provipce in the Inland Sea, on the night of the 3rd iustant. The sailing ship sank, but the crew were resored. The Oura maru, 600 tons of the Nippon Salvage Company. at the end of, fast month, want to trace the Koyel- maru reported to be drifting south of Quelpart Island, but
