Itria, formerly well known in The British-India line steamer Australian ports, was sunk as the result of a collision in the Downs on April 20th. The Itria, which was one of the first British- India line vessels. on the Australian run to be taken over for war purposes, was built in 1901. Under Admiralty control" abe remained for some time a periodical visitor to Australia, but was eventually withdrawn and placed on other routes.
Some Old Wooden Ships. In many parts of the world some very old wooden ships have been resurrected from their graveyards and put into various uses, never contemplated by their original builders, and owners. Some time ago it was mentioned that the oldest of these floating veterans wasa Norwegian barque, built 110 years ago. We are now told, however, says & Cardiff correspondent of a home paper that the old age ribbon belongs to the ketch Good Intent, recently owned by Captain McBride, who sold her to Mr. D. Davies. of Cardiff, for £380. She was built at Plymouth 128 years ago, and was registered as a vessel of 62

much discussion in shipping quarters, but the possibilities of the idea can only be realised by the careful consideration of the actual facts. Naval architects and shipbuilders generally are not opposed to the idea, though taey admit that the cost of the alteration will be great, "but not so heavy as that of building new the scheme will be submitted to a committee representative of the Admiralty, the Naval Con- struction Corps, the Board of Trade, the Institution of Naval Architecte, the Chamber of ship- ping, and Lloyd's Register. Some years ago the Navy Department at Washington considered the question when merchant tonnage was short, and actually took some action in the matter. The former Spanish gunboat Nueva Espana, which was built at Cadiz nearly thirty years ago, is about to begin a new career as a cargo boat, and also that the Govern- to convert several obsolete war- ment of Argentina has decided ships into traders.

This also is of material assistance to under- writers, as mistakes often our in cables as to the identity of the vessel on which insurances ara, to be placed, and underwritera often mistake one steamer for another. and waste deal of unnecesary time in a good consulting records to ascertain the exact voyage it is intended to cover.
