Mr. Franklin, president of the International Mercantile Com- pany, after a meeting of the. Board recently, according to Reutor's New York correspon- dent, said that the Company was negotiating with British interests for the sale of its tornaze How flying the British flag, but so far no terms had been arranged. According to market rumours, the price discussed has been £25,000,000 for 960,000 tons of shipping. The International Mercantile Marine Company holds the entire capital of the White Star Line (Oceanic Steam Navigation Company), the Atlantic Transport Company, the Intemational Navigation Com- pany, and the British and North - Atlantic Steam Navigation Com- pany, and a controlling interest in Frederick Leyland and Co... besides other business. We take it that it is these which are the

can te ascertained, the American Company's nominal capital in the concerns named is £7,678,500, but there can be no doubt that that is much below the selling value at the present time. The White Star Line's nominal capital in particular was much less than the valus of its shipping, but in August, 1916 the position was altered, a reserve of £1,000,000 being then capitalised. The dividend for 1916 on the capital as increased was 20 per cent. For 1915 it had been 65 per cent. Tonnage Difficulties of

It is biahly significant of the very large place occupied by British shipping in the general commerce cf the world that whilst ships flying the Union Jack have suffered from U boats out of all proportion to that of other flags, the stringency of transee is quite
in the United Kingdom. "The U.8.A. Mercantile Marine is in a similar position to that of the British Isles, and the demand for free tonnage is very keen, but under the needs of Government Departments, cannot be met from the usu lohannel of supply Mail advices from the New York Maritime Exchange disclose a similar state of tension amongst private shippers and shipbrokers to what is prevailing here, and a prominent member of the Ex- change remarked that for months this condition bas prevailed until it has become so burdensome that. quite a number of shipbrokers are trying to get out of the business before they are forced out there being nothing in sight to encourage them to hold on. It would be different if any daylight could be seen ahead, but freight is being piled up in all the ports with no means of determining how long it may remain without transport. Tonnage is being built and vessels launched almost daily but they go immediately ints Government service, it being, of course, the firet demand to be filled So far as rates are con
CO., LTD, cerded, it makes no difference. so long as tonnage is not available. Rates do not cut any figure in the charter market to day. The ory is," Give us boats, and charge what you like." It is reported that the U.SA. Shipping Control are in negotiation for the utilis- ation of very considerable quantities of Norwegian sail tonnage now lying in U.8. ports, and that these ships will be placed in South American trades, thereby relieving considerable- quantities of steam tonnage for the more hazardous Transalantic. requirements both of Government and private interests, end although the extent of such relief would only very partially alleviate the situation, it is the opinida of shipping men that it would result in the moving of a great amount of frel ht that has been awaiting transport for many months, ia South Atlantic ports.
