SHIPPING NEWS.

Wonsan Harbour Improvemeat, The harbour improvement work at Wonsan, which is one of the most important ports in North Korea, is being pushed forward steadily. The improvement work has been started on a rather. extensive scale and involves dredging, construction of break- water, quay wall, sto,

Inland Sea Fares Raised, The Osaks Shosen Kaisha, Amagasaki Kisen Kaisha, Uwaji- má Kisen Kaisha, and the Awa Kisen Kaisha have agreed to raise passenger-fares for Inland Sea services by from 15 to 20 por cent. from August 1st next. The four steamship companies are also considering a proposal to raise freight-rates in the Inland Sea.

Big Salvage Undertaking. The salvage of the s.s. Ohio, 4,000 tons, which foundered during the Russo Japanese war off Chinnampo, is progressing steadily, about 10,000 kwan of iron having already been recover- led. The work will be continued for three years, the total expenditure is estimated" at Y.80,000 while it is hoped that a million yene' worth of iron will [be.recovered.

Germany's Salvage Submarine. The American government has information that Germany has undertaken construction of salv age submarines, to go out when pesce comes and raise the ships of all nations which the destroy. ing. submarines have sent to the bottom. The salvage submarine is said to be fitted with specially designed grappling apparatus for attaching cables to the ships that lie on the bottom of the ocean. It is capable of operating at grest depths. Other vessels, equipped with hoisting apparatus will assist the submarine in bringing the damaged ships to the surface. Value of Japanese Steamers. Whereas the freight and charter markets have become somewhat weak, as is usually the case in summer, there is a contínusace advance in the value of steamers, especially those of large type, says the Japan Chronicle." The fact is that there is a great scarcity of ocean-going steamers of over 5,000 tons, while there is sontinous pressure on fre'ghtspace on such steamers. A fortnight ago a steamer build- ing at the Kawasaki Dockyard, Kobe, was sold to a certain large steamship company for Y1,000 a ton. It is now reported that negotiations are proceeding for the sale of another ship still on the stocks at that dockyard at Y1,100 per ton. For all other newly-built steamers of 7,000 or 8,000 tons over Y1,0 0 is quoted, In a few days the Uraga
