Generous Gift From Japan.

A gift of £5,000 from Japan to King George's Fund for Sailors has been received through the.. Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. In a letter to Captain A. W. Clarke, Deputy-Chairman of the Fund, the Secretary of State says that this gift constitutes part of a sun raised by Prince Toku- gawa, Baron Shibuzawa and a Society formed in Japan to allevi-

ate the sufferings of the sick and wounded soldiers and sailors and sailors of the Allied 'countries. The disposal of the total contri- bution alloted Gereat Britain was left entirely to the discretion. of His Majesty's Government, which decided that the money allotted for the alleviation of suffe ing among seamen should be given to King George's Fund for Sailors for the benefit of the Marice Benevolent Institutions.

died of wounds received in action on April 20. He was educated at the King's School, Chester, and the Liverpool Institute, and graduated at the University of California. He took up duties in Japan for Mesare, Jardine, Mathearn, and Co., and after- wards d siring to adopt mining. engineering as a profession he want to California and studied at the University at Berkeley. He was in a lucrative position as a mining engineer in Arizona when war broke out, but he volunteered. his services immediately, joining Borden's Armoured Motor Battery in Canada in the spring of 1915. He came to Eagland eventually.obtaining a captaincy in the Royal Engineers, and saw active service in France. He was attached to the B.F.C. In 1917, and had only returned to Frands A few days when he met he death.
