Writing to the "Times," correspondent suggests that by way of commemorating the deeda of officers and men of the mercantile service an addition be made to the Red Ensign. "Let the flag of the merchant service be henceforth charged with a white orces as the Naval Ensign is with a red one."It would be a signal mark of the country's gratitude and would speak to generations yet unborn.
Chefoo's Shipping.
At Che, during the quarter ended in December 1917 the total number and tonnage of vessels which, entered and cleared was 673 vessels of 524,154 tons, which showa, on 'comparison with the same quarter in 1916, a decrease of 121 vessels and 129,602 fons. The percentages of the various flacs were as follows: 44.5 per cent.. British; - 22.1 per cent, Japanese; 29 per cent. Chinese; 3.4 per cent. Russian; 0.8 per cent.” Chinese; 3,4 per cent. Russian; 0.8 per cent. Dutch; and 0.2 per cent. American.
Shipping Requisition. Penang, June 6.At the Chamber of Commerce shipping requisition meeting, Mr. Low proposed the resolution AX published. Mr. Watson seconded. An amendment was proposed by Mr. Mitchell and seconded by Mr. Thorne: "That this Chamber is of opinion that the general requisition of local British ship- pine is advisable provided that E fair, reasonable percentage of ówners' profit be allowed for upkeep and depreciation of the tonnage affected." This amand- ment was carried, only the proposer and seconder voting for the original resolution.
An Enterprising Company. The Robert Dollar Steamship Co. has purchase 19 mow of land at Pootung on the south side of Pailien Creek, and plans have been made to erect a number of wharves and godowns along the water f out. The main wharf will be for accommodation "of trans-Pacific boste - and i will measure 500 feet in length. At low tide the depth of water alongside will be 23 feet. In addition a smaller wharfer jetty will be constructed whip will be for the use of smaller vessels änd its length will be $50 feet: A two story reinforced concrete godown capable of holding 10,000 long tons will furnish storage for cargo, as well as for the godown offices and the quarters for both the foreign and Chinese staffs will be constructed "Shanghai Times."
