AUSTRIA'S HEAVY DEFEAT.

A Severe Blow at an Awicward Momeat.

Paris, June 24,

The general opinion is that the Austrians have received one at the most severe blows of the war and that at a time when the internal situation is menacing.

Glorious News, “

London, June 24 Italy's victory is hailed as glorious news, which will be universally felt as of great moment in the war. The an nouncement of General Diaz that the enemy is retreating in disorder is regarded as of the utmost military significance, bat experts warn against the assumption that all the danger, is averted on the Italian Front, as the ability of the Italians to take the offensive must depend on the magnitude of the Austrian disorder. Nevertheless it is conceded that the victories of Asiago and the Piave influence the balance .in favour of the Entente on all fronts, if only by discrediting. the legend of German invincibility, while the effect of the splendid victory upon the Italian temperament mar evoke a national spirit that may prove irresistible. It is difficult to determine the causes of the dramatic collapse of an offensive planned on such a grandiose scale, and backed by such enormous resources.

The warmest tribute is paid to the astonishing recovery of moral which has resulted from the avenging of Caporetto; but it is felt that the undoubted skill, rapidity and valour of the Italians is not enough to explain the Austrian decision to retreat. The internal unrest in the Dual Monarchy prob ably affected the troops, though no proof of that is found in the desperate bravery with which the Austrians fought. But news leaking out of Austro-Hungary abows that conditions" are bad enough to influence a decision of the High Com- inend that will cause a gambing of teeth in Berlin. The newspapers of London seize the occasion to emphasize the necessity for the Allies not concluding a separate peace with. the Hapsburgs, but taking a firm unequivocal stand on the side of the Austro-Hungarian Slars. The "Daily Chronicle" calls on Mr. Lloyd George and M. Clemenceau to go boldly beyond the obscure formula of the Versailles Conference thereanent and sound out clearly to all the oppressed Haps- burg peoples a,note of insurrection and resurrection.

Montello Entirely Retsken.

London, June 24.

An Italian semi-official message states: Uur pursuit at certain points reached the left bank of the Plave. The Austrians abandoned very considerable quantities of war material The prisoners are not yet counted.

Continued pressure on Sunday zrom Montello to the sea obliged the enemy to retire in disorder and he has already been thrown back at almost all points to the left bank of the Piave. Montello was enurey retaken sad along the Piave considerable bodies of italians have in large sectors fought their way to the old line on the right bank Infantry and cavalry detachments reconquered several positions on the left bank at Caposile. Numerous bombing squadrons elsewhere were also thrown across the river.

LUYak LaBUURTLES.

London, June 2

The inanifesto of the Labour Ministers awens upon the unprecedented influence of labour in the-councils of tàu estion ana, says that their position, however, recuered 100nt: anewt by the nicessant shiping, on the part of anti-national Lactioniste. it explains that they sometimes have had to vote in opposition to their inclusion. Decause that is a con- dition of the Coalition Government Nevertheless they had paased in three years measures of democrame reform greater than at any time in the history of the country. It appeals to everybody in Labour ranks w do nothing which will tend to destroy napna unity dunng war time because upon the people of Great Britain largely depends the future treedom of the world.

The manifesto of the Labour Ministers is significant be- cause it is issued on the eve of tae Labour Conterence at which the pacifist group submis a motion asking the Cou- ference to break the political zruce. The adoption of the motion would make the position of the Labour Ministers - impossible because they must then either leave the Govern ment or refuse to obey the mandate of their party. Moreover Messrs. Hodge, Barnes and Roberts are threatened with unofficial Labour opposition for their scats.

AUSTRO-HUNUARIAN POLITICAL CRISIS,

Amsterdam, June, zi Budapest newspapers, talking on the cougarian Cavinet crisis, mention Count Tisza as the probable, successor Dr. Wokerle. in Vienna is believed the Emperor will. refuse to accept the reagnation of the Cabinet, which will remain. unchanged, except probably the Polish Minister von Twardowsks retures; but the positions of the Ministers of Commerce and Agriculture are doubttul, both favouring the convocation of the Reichsrath.

The Emperor in an autograph letter to von Seidler refuses to accept his resignanoa for the present and in- struct Dim to continue the direction of affairs awaiting the return of the Emperor to Vienas from the Front on Sunday.

OPPOSITION FOR TURKEY.

Moscow, June 24, Georgia has decided to continue the war againaz 1 The Armenians have detested the Turks and are driving them towards the frontier. The Germans are guarding the Trans-Caucassian railway, the
