Japan Chronicle."

150,000 Tons of Shipping. Withdrawn.

The 150.000 tons of vessels chartered by Japan to the United States have left or are leaving this country for the other side of the Pacifin, says the "Japan Chronicle It is said that the au borities feared that these vessels would have to sal from this country without any cargo, but this apprehension per year groundless, all of them being full up. It is stated, however, that since the withdrawal of these i shine, there have been increased accumulations of cargo waiting for shipment to India, Australia.. and America. In view of this fact the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, it is reported, has begun making investigations into the effects produced by the withdrawal of 130,000 tons af shipping upon the carrying trade or this country,

Shipping Into Manila, The Governor-General of the Philippines recently issued the following proclamation:-Pur- suant to authority vested in the Chief Executive by law, the following regulations governing the entrance of vessels into Manila Bay and their departure therefrom are hereby promulgated for the information and guidance of all concerned. The Bouth Channel leading from seaward into Manila Bay has been closed to trafic and is protected by mines: This channel extends from Caballo Island on the north- to Restinga Paint on the south. The Forth Channel between Corregidr Island and the shore of Batsan Provicce is closed to traffic inward from sunset tö sunrise except to certain vessels engaged in public service. From and after six o'clock postmeridian of the first day of July, 1917, vessels will be permitted to leave Manila Bay by the North Channel with ut restriction as to time. Obedience to the above rules will be enforced by vessels of the United States Navy, including destroyers and submarines, based in Mariveles Bay, and by the batteries of Corrazidor Island.

Tribute to the Merchant Service.

Public appreciation is not altogether lacking where the work of-our-Mercantile Marine is concerned, says the "Journal of Commerce)and a well- known barrister-at-low, whilst forwarding a generous donation to the secretary of the Mercantile Marine Service Association to be.. applied to that body's benevolent work, pays a very warm tribute to the British seamen I wish to thank your council for furnish- ing one way in which we lar dlubbers can show in la measure our appreciation of the urtold heroism and devotion of our brave merchant seamen, and personally, I want you, if it is at all possible to convey my deep sense of gratitute and thanks to our seamen not only for their reat material service to us in securing our food supplies, but for the resthless bonoar they have shed upon our country in the eyes of the whole world by the splendid courage they have exhibited in the face of a cruel and cowardly enemy, and the spirit they have shown in going to sos again and a din after they knew the terrible risks and hardships they were facing. I for one will be grate'ul as long as I live to these gallant men, for brave as our sldiers in the battl-field- undoubtedly are, they would be the first to tell you that to face death and wou de at ses in stormy and dare weather, and of en alone, calls for even higher valour. The seamen too, deserve, our thanks for the s and they are making against Pacifism, and I hope, and indeed am sure, that t e nation. will remember how much re rail-rs hve done. Eir. us and taught us, and how much higher Birish pluck is set emed to-day by rea on of their undying. example.
