THE IRISH ARRESTS.

New York, May 23,

Mr. Dillon, interviewed in Dublin by the Associated Press, after condemning the Government's Irish policy denies that the Nationalists have embraced Sinn Fain ideas which he asserts are wrong and foolish and bound to end in defeat and disaster. He reiterates Nationalist adherence to Mr. Redmond's declaration that the Allien' 'cause in the cause of freedom throughout the world and declares that one of the great forces which have been the root cause of Ire land's troubles recently has been the unlimited financial support accorded to Sinn Feinism from New York. Mr. Short has returned unexpectedly to London. It is

is understood he submits to the Cabinet details of the German plot The Press Association learns on the best authority, that there is astound. ing evidence justifying the arrests, but publication is a ques-- tion affecting not merely the wolfare of the prisoners but the wellbeing of the Empire. It is unlikely even if the evidence is published that any of the prisoners will be released.

The "Daily News", Dublin correspondent says the plan of voluntary recruiting includes the formation of homogenous Irish brigades or divisions in which by the use of Irish emblems and the observance of Irish castoms every thing will be done to foster the idea of distinct nationality within the Empire. Captain Gwynn, M.P., in a letter to the press urges the desirability of assisting the Government with recruiting,

The Mansion House conference in Dublin against con- wcription ordered provision to be made for the prisoners' dependents out of the National Defence Fund. It was decid. ed to publish the correspondence between the Lord Mayor and Mr. Balfour. The former thanking Mr. Balfour for receipt of passports to America refers to the prohibition of passengers to America to take documents and ask author- ity to convey a document drawn up for presentation to President Wilson. Mr. Balfour replied on 16th May that the document in question ought first to be submitted to the Lord Lieutenant. The Lord Mayor replied on the 2nd May declining to submit to the Lord Lieutenant the document which was a direct communication between the Conference and the President of America.

Two more arrests were made in Dublin yesterday, includ ing the wife of the executed rebel leader Clarke.

At New York Cardinal Farley has prohibited priests from presiding at Sinn Fein meetings on pain of explusion from the diocese.

The "Daily Express" correspondent at Dublin has stated that General Sir Bryan Mahon will be placed at the head of a re- cruiting campaign in which regiments headed by bands will be employed throughout the country.

GERMAN BOMBS IN SWITZERLAND..

Geneva, May 23

Thirty bombs and a quantity of explosives were recently found in the Linnat river at Zurich. An investigation" revealed that the bombs were manufactured in Germany and sent to Italian anarchists to blow up munition works. Num- crous arrests have been made in Zurich, Lucerne and Lau- sanne, including the well-known anarchist Bertoni.

'ITALIAN SUCCESSES.

London, May 2L

An Italian official message says: We captured an outpost north-east of Monte-di-Valbells and advanced into the village -of Stoccareddo inflicting losses on the garrison. Consider able aerial activity brought down eight enery machines.

THE AUSTRIAN PROBLEM.

London, May 23. Lord Robert Cecil on a speech in London said the Allied Governments saw a solution of the Austrian problem in the liberation of the populations subject to Hapsrurg rule, who should have ful; iberty and ingependence and be able by zome groas federation to uphold in Central Europe the principles on which European polity must be founded unless we are to face disasters too norrible to contemplate.

TURKS' DESIRE FOR PEACE.

Amsterdam, May 22.

The Sultan toasting Emperor Kari at a Gala dinner at Constantinople spoke that his desire was to end this mur derous war. The ladies at the Imperial Harem were present in a special waiting room at the reception of Karl and the Empress. This is an innovation in Turkish social life.

BRITISH LABOUR AND PEACE.

London, May 23,

At the annual meeting of the Northumberland Miners Council proposal that the Government initiate peace by negotiation was withdrawn as the movers now considered the present time inopportune. The Congress of the National Union of General Workers at Blackpool rejected by a large majority & resolution that Labour's support of the Gover ment should cease as the war was being prolonged for materialistic and capitalistic objects,
