Large"Japanese: Dockyard Projected

From Tokushima it is reported than an extensivo.tract fland, measuring 27,000 tsubo, has been bought at Watashizos, Sakano- murs, Naka-gun, Tokushima prefecture, for the purpore vf establishing a large shipbuilding yard. Who is the purchaser of the land is not definitely known, some saying it is Messrs. Suzuki & Co., of Kobe, while others. ascribe the project' tɔ a jolat. stock company to be organized by certain shipbuilders and shipping mn in Kobe and Osaka, Re- garding the character of the pro

For New York via Panama: Con erence steamer has ben declared to load here; second half of September and rates of freight by her will be 40% above Tariff No. 16 with no rate less than 20/- per ton. The Nippon Yusen Eaisha haye. declared a steamer to load in Kobe end of September taking cargo from Shanghai wi h traný shipment at Kobe at the same rates as above.

Then followed the stoppage and examination of Japanese steamers at sea by British cruisers. The British re- Igulation of tonnage has had an unfavourable effect on the ship · ping markt in this country. The export of British shipbuilding. materials was absolutely pro- bibited. In France, too, Japanese steamer was illegally informed, while the Kenkon-maru IIL and the Sbintsu-marú ware denied supplies of coal. More recently, the American attitude- towards Japan's shipping has been very unros÷rved. : At the beginning of June last the United, States made a formal proposal to Japan that she should place some of her shipping at the Alien" disposal. The United States then urged Japan to join the proprsed agreement among the Allies con- cerning the regulation of ocean freight, rates.
