SHIPPING NEWS."

German: and AustrianShipplags

The Stockholm correspondent of The Times” says that accord- ing to the "Affarsvarlden,” on the initiation of the

German Emperor, some large German shipping companies, including the Hamburg-Amerika Line and the Norddeustcher Lloyd, will be amalgamated with some of the largest Austrian and Hungarian steam ship undertakings.

Warkworth Harbour Idir,. For some considerable time pat, says the Journal of Com- merce" to hand, the harbour at Amble forthe mid-Northumbe an legal shipping district has been almost devoid of shipping traffic, ard as a consequence the Broom- hill Collieries has been very indifferently emiloyed. It is stated. that, for the mat six months, the collieries have only worked an average of two days per week. Soms weeks, the pits have been idle altogether. The miners, in mass meeting assem- bled, have resolved to appoint a deputation to wait upon the

dire tous of the colliezies: - to ascertain why the local pits are not getting a fair share of the trade of the country, and whether anything can be done to improve upon the present seriopa atate of affairs. If the interview is unsuccessful, it is proposed to lay the matter before the Executive Committee of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain with a view to the attention of the Coal Controller being drawn tongu the shortage of employment.

How the Vaterland was Damaged.

A new and interesting account as to how the paletial Atlantic. liner the Vaterland was damaged, is supplied us in a letter which we have received from Mr. C. Wễ Bett, the managing director and general manager of Barimar: (Ltd), welding, &c., engineers, of London. Mr. Bett, in the course. of his letter, thus remarks-It seems that after the United States Government took over the, Ger- man steamers interned in United, States ports its lospectors dis- 'covered that the German crews

had made extensive use of oxy...1 acetylene cutters to partially cut through the joints and bull plate- seams. In almost all the ships intered in New York harbour this had beez surreptitiously, but sk lfully, done, and the sections cut had been carefully painted over so that all traces of the work were obliterated. The purpose evidently was to so weaken the hulls and supports as

to practically assure the sinking of the steamers when they again put to sea. Fortunately the | damage was discovered, and it is gratifying to know that the scientic welder can thoroughly repair every part injured. The steamer which sustained the most damage was the best of the fleet, the Vaterland, valued at two millious s:erling."

More Dermas Barbarity.. A terrible story of the,ses and of German barbarity is told in a letter to his friends by a captain of a West Hartlepool steamer. He stated that they sailed on Ap it 29, and on May 3 they sighted & steamer's lifeboat. It` contained three men, ..., who appeared to be dying, and another lying dead in the boat, where he had been for days, his shipmates being too west to put his body overboard. The living were got on board the steamer and the corpse was cast into the: sea. Rvary endeavour was misde to bring the three men round, but one, a fine young man named Kenneth French, Sunderland, died the same night and was buried at sex the following morning The other two men were Alexander Gilchrist, chief officer, and Roderick McDonald, chief gunnet. They stated that their vessel was the steamer Caithness, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, and carried forty-nine hands. She was torpedoed without warn-. ing, and immediately heeled over

The chief officer siked the submarine crew to pick them np, but they only jeered and spat at the poor fellows, who had by this time got the boat righted. All that were left of the crew, 19 in number, got into it. They were in an awful plight, having lost their drinking water, and the weather was very cold. Their sufferings were so terrible that most of the men were driven mad and one by one leaped into the water until only the four were left. They had been 14 days in the amall✨ open, boat.
