At the last meeting of the Imperial Merchant Service Guild War Fund Committee, further cases were considered of depen. dents of certain merchant service captains and officers who find themselves in a state of some financial stress owing to various causes arising out of the war. After these cases had been care- fully considered by the committee, weekly grants were made in three cases, in all of which the breadwinner had lost his life in the service of the country. åt the preseat time, sad to say, some of these families are experiencing great difficulty in existing in view of the increased price of al commodities, which makes the position a most difficult one, all the more so when there are young children to be taken into con- sideration. It was reported that the expenses of the fund were still increasing, and the weekly grants now amounted alone to nearly £83. The number of prisoners in enemy countries had also increased of late owing to theintensified submarine warfare, with the result that the drain upon the fund is greater at the present time than it has ever been. The committee of this fund have-now disbursed £12,372; and the keen appreciation which is felt amongst the members of the profession and their families for the assistance accorded to them is proved by letters received by secretary day by day, Amongat recent contributions to the fund are £69 per the pürzer of the sa.
