THE ALLIED OFFENSIVE,
German Front Penetrated to a Great Depth."
· London, Ang, 1.. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports as follows The Allied operations ware successfully continued despite unfavourable weather. We entered the enemy's positions advanced our line on a front of over fifteen miles from Labasso Ville on the Lys river to Steenstraat on the Year river and took possession of both villages. The French are closely co-operating with and protecting the British left faak. We captured Steenstraat, rapidly penetrating the Germad defences to a depth of two miles. Having gained the day's objectives at an early hour we continued the attack and with the greatest gallantry captured Bixschoote and positions to the south-eastward and westward of the village on a front of two and a half miles, including Korte- "koer and Cabaret. "We repalsed a counter-attack in the "afternoon. The British divisions on the centre and left centre penetrated to a depth of two miles and secured the crossings of the Steenbeke river, which were their final objectives. In the course of their attack they stormed two powerful defensive systems and carried the villages of Verlorenhoek, Frezenberg, St. Julien und Pikem, also many strongly defended farms, woods and organized locali ties, Further south our right centre, alter gaining the whole of their first objectives, including Hooge and Sane." tuary Wood, advanced against a most oberizate resistance over difficult country in the neighbourhood of the Tpres- Meain road and carried Westhoek. We penetrated the cnemy's defences to a depth of a mile in this neighbourhood, where heavy ɓghting all day long is still continuing. We repulsed a number of powerful counter-attacks. We gained the whole of our objectives early in the day on the extrane right, southward of the Zillebeke-Zanvoorde road, capturing Labasse Ville and Hollebeke. In addition te inflicting heavy casualties, 3,500 prisoners have already been brought in. It is impossible yet to accurately estimate the captures.
The Chief Battleground.
London, August 1.
Renter's correspondent at Headquarters reports:-The country where the heaviest fighting is developing may be likened to 3 vast saucer of which the German positions for the rim. Nowhere is there any, great ridge to tackle such as Viny or Messines, but a steady incline scarcely ap preciable to the eye but rendered difficult by stubbly growth and sparse trees to where further north it merges into the Yaer swamps. The final hurricane bombardment which reached ile maximum shortly before the infantry went over, was the heaviest we ever experienced.
Getting on Famously with the War.
Londen, August 1
Reuters, correspondent telegraphing at four in the afternoon Bays:-We have got on with the war famously Buring the last twelve bours. Naturally our achievements are the fruition of weeks of preparation and rehearsal fight- ing extending over such very great width that it is impos- sible to reduce to definite terms the full measury of success. Everywhere the same quiet smile of satisfaction, "speaking volumes, is observable, A whole British army had advanced an average depth of one thousand yards by ten in the morning. This means a lot in trench warfare. Prisoners are streaming in, many readily surrendering. We crossed the Yser at many places. ›-Our bridging/work is. wonderful; one division alone, which was exposed to fre the whole time, threw over seventeen bridges.
Our artillery is literally pursuing the enemy. One minute after the appointed moment for beginning the attack our guns were moving forward. The correspondent expresses aurprise that the Huns had not stiffened their front more in view of their long anticipation of the attack and surimises zhat, if the shortage of resources realises, the enamy bave large masses of reserves. But it is rather extraordinary that the enemy is not taking full advantage of their un- usually favourable positions. Our troops, imbued with fae spirit and determination, crept up close behind the barrage in readiness to rash the German trenches when the gune lengthened out. In one case they actually dashed through their own fire in order to prevent the escape of a large number of fans who were preparing to Bec. They bagged numerous prisoners at small cost,
"
The correspondent proceeds to refer to the boiling oil drums mentioned on 10th June which were enough to quench the most heroic spirits. Our people realising this did not- economise expenditure in these projectiles in some places the. A Paris communique says:—After crossing the for Cacal during the night the French, at four in the morning, attacked in conjunction with the British on their right. A formidable artillery preparation completely beveled the German organisations and inflicted heavy losses
By the end of the morning we had captured both szemy positions. Our troops, ardently passing over their objective, advanced along the Lizerne-Dixmade, road, capturing Bixschoote, Korteker and Cabaret, Our losses are insignificant. We took much material and prisoners and the battlefeld is -covered with German dead. The artillery fire on the Aisne
is most violent. Details of the Royere fighting show that the French on the whole battle-front exceeded, their objec- tive and were able to clean up tenches choked with Garman dead. The enemy at clayon in the morning attacked weat of Chevregny and were repulsed. Three German regiments attacked east of Cerny, and were driven hack by immediate counter-attack.“

3. Kerensky has returned. A battalion of death of three hundred Reval sailors forced four lines of enemy treaches instead of two as order- ed. When asked for reinforcements soldiers fired' on the sailors, who, between two fires, began to retire. Only fitcon of the men were unwounded and three officers shot them- selves rather than retreat, te

GERMAN ALLEGATION REFUTED.

London, July 31. The Admiralty denies a German official statement that hospital ships were misused in Mesopotamia.
The German allegation was based on the Commissioners' criticisms of the lack of hospital ship accommodation neces- sitating temporarily converting into hospital ships two steamers loaded with horses and ammunition.
The Admiralty points out that these vessels did not claim immunity, did not boist the Red Cross flag and, did not display macks indicating any claim to neutrality. The enemy would not have acted illegally if he had sunk them.
