A School of Marine Engineering...... We understand that a special meeting of the Technical Sub- Committee of the Education Committee of the Liverpool City Council is to be held shortly for the purpose of considering the provision of a municipal school of marine engineering. We have repeatedly discussed in these coluinns the possibitily of a short- sge, in the near future; of marine engineers, and it is pleasing, therefore, to see that some action is being taken in the matter. It is planned to supply the proposed school with the most up-to-date appliances, thus giving the marine engineers of the city and port of Liverpool the opportunity of studying the latest development◄ of the profession. The Journal of Commerce."

Tribute to British Searnan. Sir Owen Philipps, presiding at the annual meeting of af shipping company, paid a well- earned.

appreciation of the services of the marine in the war. He said:All ship:wners have lately been passing through a more than ustally anxious time « as regards the safety of their fleets, and it is difficult, if not impossible, adequately to express. what we owe to the British Navy and ita gallant personnel. The submarine campaign had made ereryone in these islands realise that the daily perils faced by our merchant sailors are not less than those confronted by the men in the t enches, and the nation bas reason to feel grateful and proud of the fine part officers and men are playing in combating the efforts of Germany to reduce us to submission by cutting off our food supplies.

Shipmasters' Association: President's Hustle. Commander A. Houghtoo, R.NR the president of the Mercantile Marine Service Association," - has returned to Liverpool (says. the "Journal of Commerce") after a strenuous week in London, during which time be devoted the whole of his to furthering the energies

terests of his association. On Sunday, the 3rd inst., he attended ja commemoration service of the battle of Jutisad, held at the London Opera House, and having of admission he ticket

no

4 introduced himself to the officials as a representative of the M.M,- S.A., and was at once requested to occupy a seat on the platform. He describes the meeting as a grand success. the huge building being packed from fi or to ceiling besides which an overdow meet. ing was held. A considerable portion of two days were spent in conferring with Captain Will- ett. at 90, Fencburch-strect, on matters connected with the mau-

Although not con nected with the work of the association, it may be mentioned that Commander Houghton met a large number of old friends at Trinity House on the following Monday, and had the honour of lunching in the company of the Dute of Connaught and Prince Louis of Battenburg. At the special Court held earlier, his Royal Highness, the Duke of Connaught, was unanimous'y 18- elected Master for the ensuing year. Needless to say, it is felt by his colleagues, that the pre- xideat put in a véry useful week and did much to further the interests of the association and the members of bis profession.
