MANILA LINE-A weekly service is maintained wish waila by vessels with good passenger accom

Mr. Hughes, Prime Minister, states that the Federal Cabinet has discussed the possibility of shipbuilding in Australie, but the difficulty at present is the question of labour. The Cabinet is, however, calling together a conference of the Unions interested, including those of shpwrights, boilermakers, and engineers, and doubtless, added. the Prime Minister, Australia, with labour's co-operation, will be successful in establishing this industry, thus solving, "to some extent, the existing problem of freight shortage.

Lake Steamers and the Atlantic. As to the advisability of placing lake-built vessels in the Trans atlantic trade, the committee on maritime affairs of the -Boston (U.S.) Chamber of Commerce recently reported as follows at the annual meeting. “The foun- dering at sea of the lake-built- steamer Maryland while on voyage from Philadelpbisf London last December, with th loss of her entire crew, was subject that called attention. the fact that certain types vessels brought from the Great Lakes were not futed for the Transatlantic trade. The com- Jmittee was of the opinion that

many of this type of vessels are structurally not strong enough to withstand the Atlantic winter etorms, and that some action should be taken by the Federal Government to safeguard the lives of sailors on vessels of this character."

"Pleasant Surprises" Expected.

The "Lobby" correspondent of the "Journal of Commerce" recently write :-"There may be in the near future a pleasant sur- prise for thore shipowners and members of the Bautical profession who think more should be made by the Government of the know- ledge possessed of submarine war- fare by the merchant service. Mr. Lloyd Geore is an amazing man. History will show that be has a sublime genius for rapidly putting his finger on the right key and an invincible insistence upon | getting things first hand. I kdow that he has a great faith in and an attachment to, the mercantile. marine of this country. It may serve, as a straw does to show. the run of a current. to show that the Prime Minister is making a point of personally interviewing many experienced shipmasters who have become familiar with submarine practice. One of the. most recent captains he saw belongs to a well-known Liver pool line."

"The Day of " Standardisation,"

It looks as though standard- isation in engineering will make much progress. Sir John Wolfe Barry, the famous civil engineer, is strongly advocating the cause, and he asserts that the beneficial effects already attained by en- gineering standardisation are. immense, and that in the year before the war there were turned out something like 2,401,000 tons of rolled sections for construction and shipbuilding at a value of about £17.500,00. It will be remembered that Mr. D. B. Mori son, managing director of Messrs Richardsons. Westgarth and Co made out a powerful case on this subject at the recent spring meeting of the Institution of Naval Architects. Recently there was reproduced an official re- vision of a standardised specifica- tion for marine engines which has been approved of, and adopted by the North-East Coast, Institu- tion of Engineers and Shipbuild- LTD.ers.

A Reuter's telegram dated Washington, May 25 says:-It is apnounced that, differences, be- tween Mr. Denman chairman of the Shipping Board, and Major-"- General Goethals, manager of the Boards of Emergency Eleet- Corporation, has been settled, and the Corporation will proceed with the construction of both steet and wooden ships. General Gosthals, who, in his speeches, characterised the plan to build a thousand wooden ships as hope less, will be given a free rein in the shipbuilding programme, He has already accepted the pro- posals of two steel companies to turn out three million tons of steel shipping in eighteen months, and will give contracte LOR wooden vessels as fast as builders with facilities for, building them come forward.
