Women on the Land. London, April 8.-Five thone- and five hundred women had up- plied for enrolment in the Wo- men's Kand A-my'ap tô midday yesterday. Women who enrol now will have the advantage of following the growth of the crope from the time when the land is ploughed and ready for the send until the barvesting and will be: correspondingly more valuable to -the farmers and the country next - year than those who join up later, The greatest need at the inoment is for milkers, and the return of women to milking and dairy work is received with delight by fariners, especially by those with pedigree stock.

Head Office:
The present progressive Qur- erament of Queeneland has em barked upon a number of State industrial enterprises, most of which have not been working long enough sù yet to show de finite results. According to the Brisbane Daily Mai, the State in parance office- and the Públic Curator's office have received consistently good patronage dur ing the year, though the former has been subjected to much criticism on secount of its rates. The State batchers' shops show & profit for the year of £2,865. The Central sugar mille are merely a temporary expedient for the par-- pose of resisting growers in the districts in which the mills exist, Stations, hotels, coal mines, saw. mills, the timber basiness, and the batter business, complete the|| 7 Jinkee Rd. list of Stats enterprises to date. Medicina! Value of Indian Opium. Indisaepium is already being atilised freely by morphine manu. facturers in the United Kingdom, and the impression, which bas recently received considerable publicity, that it is not suitable for European medicinal purposes is entirely erroneous. As st pre- sent produced, Indisa opiam is not no consistently rich in morphine sa aither Turkish or Persian; but the quality can be considerably enhanced at once by improving the present methods employed for its collection and preparation. At the suggestion
of the Imperial Institute, experi- | ments are now being conducted
in India with regard to the com- parative merits of different varieties of poppy for opiam pro- duction, and there seeme to be no reason why an Indisu product <qual to the Turkish should not be forthcoming. Before the War the United Kingdom obtained its Eupplies of opiam from Tarkey and Perria; but the first of these sources is now cat cff, while the other is difficult of Bocess. It became necessary, therefor, to look to India, which country formerly exported its opium to Chins, and the Indian Govern“ ment gave sproial permission for the shipment of opium to the Voited Kingdom. - United Empire.
