Locating Sound-Signals in
Fog.
Had it not been' for the war more would doubtless have heard of an apparatus invented and patented by Mr. David Wright Smith, M.A., B. L. (author of "The Law Relating on the Rule of the Road at Sea"), which practically gives the effect of sight in fog, so far as regards the special signal which forms part of the apparatus. It la particularly adapted for use in crowded waters; as the signal is heard through the ear tubes only in the direction from which it proceeds, and the pointer then single degree. Every vessel to be shows compass direction tɔa located must be fitted with the special sound-signal in addition to her ordinary steam whistle. The method recommended is as follows:-Immediatly following the prolonged blast on the steam whistle required by the Collision Regulation, the special signal
