Mr. Hughes declared that the only hope American workmen had of not succumbing to foreign competition after the war was a tarif at least equivalent to the differ ence in the price of labour in Americs and abroad.

RECORD SHIPBUILDING.

November 6, 5.15 a.m. A report published by "Lloyd's Register" states that 620 vesela, of 2,262,709 tons in all, are now being built under the supervision of the "Register," "the largest in the bistory of the Society.

The output in the United Kingdom remains far below normal, but the figures show the success of the efforts of neutrals, particularly the United States, to create and ex-- tend their plants to cope with the increasing demand for tonnage.

GERMAN NEWSPAPERS COMPLAINTS.

A message from Amsterdam says that German papers complain that the Reichstag is muzzled because the Gov. ernment is determined not to tolerate discussion on its intended messures.

The "Koelnische Zeitung" says that one of Herr Groener's first steps will be to veto newspapers advertise- ments secking and offering industrial, commercial or pro- fessional labour, male and female. It says there are grave political and economic reasons against such a step.

ANOTHER TIRADE AGAINST ENGLAND.

The "New York World" publishes a long statement Banctioned by Herr von Bethmann Hollweg, which is mainly a tirade against England, who is "bent on wiping out Ger- many from the face of the earth.".

He is convinced that the rest of the world will not per- mit Germany to sbare the fate of Carthage, and declares. that Germany must have room for expansion, especially through the Balkans towards Asia.

THE MUDDLE IN GREECE.

November 6, 6.5 km. Telegrams from Athens state that the Greek Royal Government is perseonting the Venizelists.

Twenty-five officers are at present imprised and one was executed at Ekaterinn, before the Venizelist occupa tion. A decree dismisses from the Army and Navy officers joining M. Venizelos.

Reuter's correspondent at Athens says the King presided at a protracted meeting of the Cabinet Council. The Minis- ters and party leaders discussed particularly the question
