of benefit has been the improve- Bent in the steam navigation of the Yangtsze between Chungking and Ichang. It is a matter for [regret, writes H.M. Consul, that
no British companies have en-* gazed in Upper Yangiste steam navigation. One native company with two vessels paid a dividend for over 30 per cent. for 1914,. which rose to nearly 40 per cent.. for 1915. One of the vessels en- gaged has already paid for itself in two reasons, Two boats are being built at Shanghat for Chinese owners, and it is rumoured that the Japanese are building for this lucrative trade. There is no doubt that it will not be long before the number of vessels on this run will be very considerably increased. Toward the end of 1915 a Con- servancy Board was formed with a view to the removal of the rapids, in which direction some attempts have already been made (nearby private enterprise but local political events are likely to postpone indefinitely any steps to this end. The Chinese authorities, however, have already done a good deal in the way of erecting signal stations, beacons, &c. In 1915 the direct trade in imports Into Chungking from foreign countries was shared as follows:----- From Hongkong, £75,000; from
