The mortality returns for the week ending January 15 abowed a total of 178 deaths giving a mortality rate 26.49. There were two European deaths recorded. Twelve deaths were due to malarial fever, 29 to phthisis, 13 to pneumonia, 9 to beri beri.

Chinese Charged at Liverpool.

Chan Chun-lee, manager of a Chinese grocery shop, was com→ mitted for trial at Liverpool on December 13 charged with at- tempting to bribe police officers in connection with an alleged shebeening prosecution. It was stated that he offered a detective s cheque for $100. Bail of £100 was allowed.
