The Panama Canal

The delay which has cecured" in re-opening the Panama Canal attests in itself the rerioumess of the trouble caused by the land- slides, and it must be very dis- appointing to everybody interest- ed in the new waterway to learn that Colonel Goethals, the Engineer-in-Chief, is evan yet unable to say when the Canal will be re-opened to traffic, "because of the uncertainty regarding the movement of the slider," 19 the telegram had it. The latest slides have evidently proved far more serious than they were at first believed to be, and we notice in an American, cari- temporary a・・ statement by Professor Miller, who cecupies the chair of Geology at Lehigh University, to the effect that aninterrupted service through the Canal must not be expected for several years. The Professor, who has recently visited the Canal, said that anyone who has not been in the region can scarcely appreciate the extent to which the slides extend,
