Home Ship-building:

The returns compiled by Lloyd's Hoglater of Shipping show that, excluding warships, there were 432 vessels of 1,538,177 tona gross under construction in the United Kingdom at the close of the quarter ended Sept. 30, 1915. The tonnage now under construc- tion is nearly 30,000 tons more than that which was in hand at the end of last quarter, but about 187,000 tons less than the ion- nage building 12 months ago.

The Port of Trang:

The Aoting British Vios-Consul at Paket (fr. G. A, V. Fitzger- ald), reporting on a visit made by him to the district of Trang in the end of May and beginning of June last, states that so far no steps have been taken to improva the entrance to the port of Trang. There is a regular steamer service three times a fortnight between Trang and Penang, and a most irregular service via coast posts, between Trangal Paket. The boat on this latter run caters solely for cargo. Sinos Ooto- ber Inst communication by rain has been in existence between Trang and the neigh. bouring Monthon of Nakon Britamaratone passenger service do runs daily to and from Tung- sawng. The Panama Canal and Japanese

Shipping,

It is generally supposed here that in the Atlantic the situation to be created by the blocking of the Panama Canal will be covere for most abipping interests, saya the Japan Times. All ships on the Panama route will be employed on the coastal service in the Atlantic and South-Amerion waters, which will certainly lead to keen competition among steamship companies. Since the Panama Canal was opened to Leave Hongkong the traffio, the N. Y. K. has run some vessels to New York from Kote through the Saes Canal on the outward voyage, aud through the Panama Canal on the homeward voyage. The Panama route between New York and Kobe is 10,447 nautical miles, being covered in 30 days end 14 hours, while the Suez route between Now York and Kobe stands at 12,801 miles, requiring 48 days and 17 hours to cover. Therefore, if those vessels take the Blues routs on their return voyage, pending the block. ing of the Panama Canal, they will necessarily lose 9 days and 8 hours

Though the route may appear to a casual observer as cheaper than the Sues route, at least with the Cansi tolls, it requires a longer voyage and affords no substantial consign- ment to the Far East.
