Army is that the brain of the Army should be so far away from the actual scene of operations that he is absolutely detached from the atmosphere of war, and that between himself and the front there should be installed so many nervous shock absorbers that the quarters of the great chief him- self became the realm of pore reason, with no noise and excite ment and hurrying sides to im pair his judgment.
I recall conversation I once had with Mejar (now Teutetiant General) Tanska, Field-Marabal Oyama's personal A.D. C. "I should have liked to be with the General Stuff" I remarked to him, "during the Battle of Mak- den. It must have been an Dr citing time with you." My friend laughed and answered:"You would bave had a great surprise, I imagine. There was no excite ment at all. How do you suppose Field-Marshal Oyama spent much of his time during the battle ?" Ona naturally imagined that it was spent scrutinizing mapa and making plans, and I said this to Tanaka. Not at all," he replied,
hoa the battle began our work was largely finished. It was bat ncorsary to make an ocossional change in the lies bere and there, and thie took out a few minaten. Most of the time the Field-Marshal and Kodeme (Chief of the General Steff) were playing ereque."
