It engaged them, and soon the German cruiser was badly damaged; she lowered her flag and ran athore, while the other oruiser and the destroyers retreated. Then, an hour later, the Russian squadron encountered the armoured cruis- er Roon, with some light oruisers and a destroyer. They renewed the battle, the action fasting half an hour, when the enemy retired southward and was joined by another light cruiser. The Russian cruisers re-attacked them, increasing the speed of their flight. The Russians discontinued the pursuit at 11 30. After the battle, some German submarines attacked unsuccessfully. The Russian casual- ties were insignificant.
