curry the
Indian Yarn Trade In China. In the course of a speech made at the annual meeting of the Bom- bay Millowners' Association, the Chairman, Mr. Nerohem Morargi- Gocnidas made the following statement with regard to the de- cline of the Indian yaru tale with China
To a very large extent it is the fault of the Indian mills that they dre allowing "Japanese yarn to steal a march over their own. In- diun yarn is very defective com- pared to Japanese yarn in the quantity of reeling strength, or derly bundling, packing and so on a the other hand, the Japanese are putting forth every effort to diminish cost of product- in eo us to undersell Indian yara, sad at the same time to con- *sult the taste and the sentimenta of their numeroas customers, If Indian millowners continae the laissez faire policy of the last few years, it is to be feared that a large portion of the Indian ex- port trade will be entirely gone. Unfortunately for our industry, no concerted action was taken eitheir to reduce the production or to induce a quicker off-take with the refalt that, with cotton again in the vicinity of 63. per 36, a bad and somewhat irrea- pensive market, and a huge stock of manufactured goods on hand, Even the current year dose not give more hopes of prosperity. than did the year under review.
**Manchuria's Trade..
A British Consular report on Manchuzia sage that the quality| of British articles is often un- necessarily high for the market. The first essential is cheapness, and a lower grade of merchandise will meet the requirements of the purchaser equally well. Cóm- mercial travellera who make a round of the retail establishments once or twice a year will find plenty of business. They should be pre- pared to put up gro'lsin.smell lots. The majority of Japanese shops appear to buy their goods in Japan. In some cases such merchandies may come from a bonded warehouse, but the terms of payment allowed by Germon merchants will often induce: Japanese shopkeepers to buy gooda which have already paid Japanese import duty,§. British manufacturers sending their goods to the Japanese mur- ket would be wise to have their trade marka registered in Tokio, Generally speaking, most of the business at Tairen is done on a c.i.f. basis, the vendor drawing on the buyer at 90 days sight. Some business is done on a f.ö.b. basin. Mach business, however, is done on ther conditions, principally cash against documents, which is usually interpreted by the buyer as cash on receipt of goods.
con-
Hokkaido Timber. The estimated smcaut of im. port of Hokkaido timber to Manchuris this year is about; 100,000 pieces of timber each of a fcot square and 12 ft. in length, valued at about Y250,000 which is about half the total of last year. The average annual imports from Hokkaido to Manchuria bave yet rarely sunk below Y500,000. This estimated falling-off is, we hear, rounded on, the general business depression in "requence of the War and also the comparatively large stock held over from last year. The timber Henɛon of this year was beökward in ita reopening by about a month owing to the belated advert of the thawing season. The timber season was introduced when the steamer freights were very stiff; and this and a few other con siderations have made it impos gible to lower the raling price, Moreover, as the Sino-Japanese crisis threatens to culminate in raptare, the leading local timber dealers are casting about for some means to get rid of their stooks. The first import consignment from Hokindo this season took] place about the 10th instant,
