The Theatre Royal was prokod to overflowing on Saturday night, when the Howitt-Phillips Com- pany presented the excruciating. ly funny play, "What the Butler Saw

To-night the company stages house rescanded with uncontroll-Waterloo" and "Those Terri-Spy able laughter. It was undoubted-tible Twins.". ly the best and fasaiest performance given by the Company during their roason here, and it saited a Satur- day night audience down to the ground. It may be added that, full of humour as the play itself was, the performers even improved upon it.by jutroducing any number of topical allusions; especially in the fancy dress ball scene, which made a distinct sppeal to the large audience.

The story is woven around life ia, a hydropathic establishment, rang by a scion of a noble house who; until he comes into the title and estates, is willing to turn his hand to anything, and he engages one of bis chame to be the builer of the establishment. This individual has been taken from a riable job, and, naturalis, he is not altogether versed in household étiquette. Among the residents are an irrascible old General, a typically tight-fisted Jaw, a doting old professor and the usual a ray of hydro girls. Into this crowd comes a young Irishman by the name of Jack Barrington, an attractive young men who has a weakness for women-kind and who convenient- ly forgets to mention the frot that he is married. Later, his young, wife arrives from the Staten, and, as the folk in the eatab- lishment have treated him very well and his own ends are served thereby, he is able to per auade his wife to help keep up the fiction that he is unmarried,

Some highly amusing situations osturally develop, and most of the compromising incidents are in lided in "what the butler saw." The parte could not possibly hao been better allotted. Mr. Weeler Dryden, as the butler, was too funny for words, while Mr. Charles Howitt, in the cher acter of Jack Barrington, was simply immenee. He is certainly one of the most versatile actoresver geen out East. As Barrington's wife, Miss Gertrude Godart could not have been improved upon. She had a most difficult role to sustain, and she played it as only s talented and experienced actress could. Mr. Cyril Rawdor, as the old General, was exceedingly clever, and big "make-up was perfect. Toe part of the Pro- fessor was taken by Mr. Norman Thompson, and he also scored a big success. The other chariotere were aleo in most capable banda.
