The Germans Again Repulsed.
Oct, 19, 12.45 s.m. An offcial statement issued in Paris at 11 o'oleck in the evening atates: Last night the Germans essayed two violent attacks north and east of St. Dis, but were repulsed with serious loans to the enemy. No other information of importance bas been received regarding the day's operations.
The Big Battle-Official British Report.
Oct. 18, 720 pm. The London Gazette pablishes despatches from Field Marshal Sir John French, continuing his report from August 28. These state that the British ratiremotit being followed closely by the enemy's cavalry moring south-east from Saint Quentin, the enemy's pursuit was very vigorous. I reprezented my position to General Joffre on August 20, says Field Marshal French, "and finally arranged to effect a further short retirement towards Compiegne and Soissons, promising, however, to do my utmost to keep within a day's march of him. This Germin flink now appeared to seriously ondangar. my line of communications with Havre. I had already evacuated Amiens and orders were given to change the base to Saint Nazaire and to establish an advanos buse at Lamint. Despite the severe defeat of the German Guard Corps it was not part of General Joffre's plan to pursue the advantage, and a general retirement to the Marne was ordered. While closely adhering to the strategic conception to draw the enemy until the situation was favourable for the assumption of the offensive, General Joffre found it necessary to modify his methods from day to day, owing to the developments of the enemy's plans.
.
We continued our retirement and by September 3 the British were south of the Mirne between Lagay and Signy-Signets After destroying bridges, we continued the retirement behind the Seine, Meanwhile the enemy cross the Marne in considerable fores and threatened the Allies all along the line.
General Joffre informed me on the 5th that he intended to take the offensive forthwith, as the conditions were favourable. Com- bined movamente against the German (link cɔmarsadəd on the Gih. and the great battle opened, stretabing from Menonville to north of Verdun. It concluded on the evaning of the 10th, whoa, the Germans had been driven back to a line from Soissons to Rheims, losing thousands of prisoners, my guns and enormous masses of transport,
About September 3 the enemy appeared to have changed his plan, determining to stop the advance direction Paris for air recon- naissances. September 4 showed the main colom moving south east. I conceive it that at about poon on the 6th the enemy realised that a powerful threat was being made against his flank, and began the great retreat.
Blog Although he regrets the heavy losses, Field Marshal French thinks them not excessive in view of the magnitude of the fight from Mons to the Saine and back to the Aisne, during which the British were ceaselessly engaged without a single day's halt for rest.
On the morning of September 13, Field Marshal French ordered a British advance, to orosa the Aisas. The enemy retired in the evening and thereafter made a determined stand along a strongly entrenched line from north of Compiegne along the valley of the Aisne to bayond Rheims. The enemy's position was strong- thened by siege artillery brought from Maubeuge, which fell a few days previously.
