and Panama as compared with the Suez route, but until experience shows that the shipping com- panies may as confidently count upon their ships getting through the Panama Canal as they have been accustomed to count upon thoir ships passing through the Suez Canal without more than ordinary delays arising from a congestion of traffic, they will have a very natural hesitation about reading ships by the Panama route. It would be an expensive matter for a ship well laden with cargo from China and Japan to cross the Pacific and on arrival at Panama to learn that a serious landslide had blocked the Canal to an extent involving the suspension of traffic for some weeks. We hope therefore that the landslide reported a few days sgo is not so great sa the im agination of those acquainted with the difficulties of the ex- cavation work there can easily picture it to be; and in any case it will be hoped that when once the damage done has been repaired the engineers will be able to give to the world the assurance that nothing short of an earthquake will cause the Canal to be again interrupted
