The Church's Problem. In the columns of the Standard the question of Sabbath obeary- ance and dwindling church attendance has been under dis. cussion. The problem which lies in the path of the Church is a very great one, for it aseme to be admitted that the Church is losing its hold upon the people, that the people do not attend the services as they used to, and that ths number of church-goera is steadily declining. One of the note-worthy contributions to the discussion comes from Rev. Julius Lawson, a London olegyman, who admits the need of the Church to. be mare definite and exact in ite teaching of Christianity. Mr. Lawson, who writes with special reference to the Anglican Church, points out the

effects of the Reformation and. that it is for the time in a state of suspension and does not com- mand the definite loyalty of the masses. Unity, he alleges, is wanting among ita priests. Mr. Lawson does not believe that the man who fille pews by preaching on popular topics is wanted, but, rather, the man who will bring people to church for the true worship of Christ.

Bees and Ants, Scientists who have devoted themselves to the study of the Bocial organisations formed by such insects as bees and ants have. expressed the opinion that a deeper, knowledge of the development and character of these organisations would be of great assistance to man in direct- ing him along the proper path. There is certainly a great fascina- tion in the study of these insect societies, the more especially se they represent, in some degree, what has been depicted by enthusiasts as the ideal form of society. It would be unsafe to affirm that the social structure of bees and ants has reached a permanent form and is incapable of farther development, but, on the other hand, it is obvious that in certain species degeneration has set in, while in all such a delicate balance has been roached that it requires only a slight interference to throw the whole. organisation into disorder. In this respect such organisations may be likened to the ancient

Chind Hail,
The Price of Food in Hongkong. For most of the increases, there can be no excuse advanced. Why should a war in Europe affect, the price of Chinese-grown vegetables from neighbouring territory or the price of egge for example? The foot of the matter is that the European is to a very large extent in the hands of the Chinese cöm- pradore, who will seize the flim aiest excuse to extort " squeeze." Residente in the Colony will have, and are having, to pay dearly enough for the war without being fleeced by a rapacious set of Obinese, and it is to be hoped that the Food Committee will not long remain a food committee only in name, but will show these extortioners that while they enjoy the privilege of trading in a British colony they must trade fairly. By the way, we
we wonder if the committee is aware that though the price of flour was fixed at eight cents, certain compradores in Kowloon refuse to supply it under ten conta a pound ? Why do not the Food Committee in- quire into matters of this sort?
