GENERAL NEWS.
Growth of Insanity. The Commissioners in Lunacy published inst week their 88th annual report, which is also their last, since under the Mental, Deficiency Aot, 1913, they are replaced, as from April 1 this. year, by the new Board of Control. The report again shows that insanity is increasing, but the rate of increase was slightly lower last year than it was in previous years. On January 1, 1914, the number of notified insane persons under care in England and Wales was 1-10,237. This was an increase for the yia- of 1,800, but the increase last year was 2,718, and the average annual increase for the Inst 10 yoars was 2,304. On the other hand, in 1004 ono person in 287 of the population was under care as insano; in 1914 the proportion had risen to one in 286, and since 1859 the ratio of insane to population has risen from 18.67 per 10,000 to 37.59. The total number of admissions to institu tions during last year was 22,303, or 129 below, that recorded in 1912; but the number of first admissions was 250 above the average of the last 10 years, though it was a slightly smaller proportion of the population.
