JAVA SUGAR INDUSTRY.
In the fudische Mercur a do- tailed story appears of the sugar industry and trade of Java dur ing the past 25 years, and, inter alia, it is shown that the con- sumption of sugar in the Dutch ladies is relatively very small. It does not amount to over 50,000 tons for the whole of the archipelago. "The balanse, of coareo, goes to foreign countries. The distribation in the year 1912 was as follows:-Europe, 142,244 tons, or 11.1 per cent. of the total; America, 40,873 tons, or 3.2 per cent.; Australia, 92,261 tons, or 7.1 per cent.; China, 201,690 tons, or 16.3 per cent.; British India, 461,845 tons, or 35.8 per cout; Singapore, 101,320 tons, ar 8.1 per cent.; and Japan, 250,164 tons, or 18.4 per cent. Compared with preceding years the movement outwards of Java sugar has undergone considerable modifications, The export to Europo W38
