National Fisheries In 1913.
The Annual Report on Sen Fisheries for 1913 was published last week in two parts on the. plan first adopted last year. The first part [Od. 7449] contains an interesting survey of the marine. fishing industry of England and Wales at the present time, and the second [Od. 7448] the bulk of the statistical matter. The value of the sea fish landed in England and Wales during 1913 amounted to $10,337,000, and showed an increase of consider- ably more than a million pounde over the previous highest figure, that of the preceding Reckoned in terme of homen food, the year's catch amounted to some 18million hundredweight, exclusive of "shell-fish,” which for statistical purposes includes lobsters, crabs, and other edible crustaceans. Not all this quantity of food went to supply British
growing export trade with the Continent in herrings and other fish. This is set off to a

a traffic condnoted by British trawlers direct with Dutch ports, which has shown rapid expansion, since its recent beginnings. Be- sides its commercial and alimen tary aspects the fishing industry. is a great employer of Isbou. The number of men and boys regularly employed in 1913, is given 89 37,442, while occasional labour brings the total up to 44,804. The great feature of fishing in 1913 was the unprece dented productiveness of the berring fishery. This is attributed, at least in large part, to the fine; calm autumn which brought little Interruption due to the weather, and to the increasing effectiveness of the fishing fleets, owing to the growing use of steam and of larger nets. It may possibly also be due in some mesaure to favour- able conditions in respect of temperaturo or salinity, and in addition to all these factors, to of a very large stock of herrings the presence for gome years, past in North Sea waters.
