THE MILITANTS.

(To the Editor of the Hongkong Telegraph.)

Sir, In one of your leaderettes to-night, you say, that the Militants are chagrined at not getting their own way, Your statement is incorrect. Chagrin is the result of defeat and the Militanta are just warraing to the fray. Defiance not chagrio in thej note that they sound.

·

The age is a physical one. The majority of mon think physically, live physically and dio physically and even the love of woman only serves to awakon a physical paa sion in them; and now Man has found himself face to face with Spirit, and thinking that he has to do with something physical, he tries to crush it. Poor mon! If the results of his ignorance were not so grievous one would feel inclined to laugh at his die- may. As it is one pities him and the unfortunate victims of his ignorance. The cry for freedom is a spiritual cry. As Spirit is free so will man be, and the longing for freedom which is spiritual, is stronger than a longing for bodily life which is physical; hence that phenomenon which so Burprises men, namely the Milit- ants' contempt for imprisonment, torture and death. And still man erics for stronger measures; what stronger measures can you have than torture?

And Oh, the guileless entire, the "unconscious sarcasm, the naive innocant irony of the heading of your leader on the same page. I will not spoil it by commenting on it. "A Nation's Ilonour at; Stake. "Thore is a Buddhist story of an old man who gave a knife to each of his sons

·REMARKABLE ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERIES.

Obeogto. Revsived June 10, Two French archaeologists, with special knowledge of China, who have beep exploring in Dzechuan have arrived at Ohengia and report interesting finde. They bring with thom excellent photographs of Han Dynasty monuments, Pculptures and other articles. They have conferred with M. Torrance who discovered the cave-tomba on the banks of the Min river and after an examination of his collection of images, vases, parts of animals and coins from the caves they fully confirm the early Han dalo and Chinese character of the discoverios.

The newspapers publish the discovery of a remarkable ancient cave at Langchong-hsien which contains several model houses in bronze, basins, ovens, dishes and chop- sticks in several of its compartments. A district official visited the cave and took away all the articles.

"WHITE WOLF."

HOW HE ELUDES THE TROOPS.

Teking. Received June 10. A letter from the border says the "White Wolf" bandits have each two horses. They ride one and use the other to carry plunder. They thus travel much faster than the soldiers and leave a fearful trail of devastation. The Szechuan troops are heavily massell along the border.

OIL CONCESSIONS.

AMERICA AND A BELGIAN PROPOSAL.

Nothing bas been signed, apparently owing to American pressure on the ground that the American Trust has a monopoly

for one year.
