Good News for Officers, “ The Mercantile Marine Service Association is informed that Mesers. O.Salveson &05., ofLeith, have recently increase the pay of their Masters, Officers and En- gineers, Changes for the better are also being made in the rating of the Officers of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, and the Asiatic Steam Navigation Company have now issued their official scale of salaries, dating from July 1 last, in which it is shown that Third Officers' pay ranges from £9 138 4d to £ll per month; Second Officers from £12 to 14; First Officers from £15 to 521 13a 44, and Commen- ders from £21 13s 4t to £40 per month, in addition to which the latter receive a bonus of £40 per

annum..

Motor Barges for the Coal Trade. For transporting coal on inland waterways the Alabama and New Orleans Transportation Company have introduced 1,000 ton hargea to work between the Alabama coal-fields and New Orleana, a total distance of 500 miles, The

route will be by various rivers to Mobile Bay thence by way of MiB sissippi Sound, Lake Borgue and anal and the Mississippi River to New Orleans. In the past 20 years the Federal Government has spent several million dollars on this water route, improving river channels, building locks, etc., BO that the whole route is now avail- able for craft drawing not more are 240 feet long and 32 feet wide tean 6 feet of water.
