India's Shipping Trade.
A Blue Book recently issued gives a review of the shipping trade of India for the year ended March 31,1913 which shows the enormous developments that the shipping has undergone since the year 1008, the increase from then to last year being no less then 35 per cent., or 4,540,000

the
The tonnage entered under the British flag was 77.4
'cent, of
total, and though these figures give no cause for disquietude as regards the invasion of British waters by |foreign tonange, it is significant that nearly a quarter of the total shipping trade of India should be ander foreign flage, carrying cargo between British possessions. The tonnage entered under the British possession has been only 14 per cent, more than the proportion entered under the same flag in the Southern ports of the China coast where the Red Ensign has been itself practically in foreign waters but where, nevertheless, it has more thon held its own, while at Canton the proportion under the British flag 188 72 per cent, or only five per cent less than that of India,
The figures will perhaps serve to show that the advantage of posression makes very little difference in favour of the British flag at ports were foreign sub- idised competition is concerned.
The net increase in the value of mports and exports of mer chandise by san amounted to 11.1 per cent. of the total for 1911-12,
