H. M Consul at Saigon (Mr. T. F. Carlisle) reports that the |total; amount of metallic orea exported from Haiphong during | 1912 was 20,478 metric tons (one metric ton equals 2,204,8 lbs, a decrease of 2,343 metric tons 28 compared with 1911; the diminu- tion being mainly ia zinc ore. The oresexported in 1912 consisted | chiefly of zino (25,491 metric tons), antimony (536 metric tons), tin. (282 metric tone), and lead (116 metric tons). The bulk of the ore from Yannan, chiefly tin, passes through Tonkin in transit, and is therefore not included in the above total.

Rubber Adulteration, Although the Belgian Govern- meat has reduced or partly abolished the export duty on rabber from the Congo, the question of the siloption of fur, ther measures to improve the situation of prices is being, dis- cussed in Belgian colonial encies. In the Journal du Congo, for instance, it is suggested that a [law should be passed against the [adulteration of vubber,

Which is

said to have reached dangerous dimensions. Thus, whilst the Belgian Congo has exported to Belgium 100,000 tons of rubber in recent years, no less then thres | limes bis quantity of manufac

tured rubber have been sold in Belgium. Kia contended that this fast shows that two-thirda: of the latter consisted of foreign additions, which materially re- duced the value of the raw rubber. If legislative steps were taken so as to reserve the designation of rubber to goods containing at least two-thirds of "rubber, it 18 considered that this would not only assist producers, who would than be confronted with an increased demand, but that it |would also protect the interesta. of consumers, as the quality of rubber manufacturers declines in proportion to the quantity of foreign additions made to it.
