Admiralty Shipbuilding Orders,
In addition to the ordere for six torpedo-boat destroyers recent- ly announced, the Admiralty have placed orders for seven torpedo- boat destroyers with the following Yarrow, three firms:-Messrs.
vesisle; Messre. Thornycroft, two vessels; and Messrs. Haw-" thorn Leslie, two vessels. Some of these vessels were begun by: the firms mentioned a few months ago as stock boats. As these reseals are practically of the same dimensions as the Admiralty design for 1013-14 and offer in somarespects certain slight advan- tages, the Admiralty bave decided to exercise the option of purchase offered to them. The issue of orders for the remaining three vessele of the 1913-14 programme will be decided in due course, The Admiralty have decided to build five light oruisers of the 1013-14 programme in the docke yards instead of three as originally intended, allotting the remaining three of the programme to co- tract, as the tenders received from many of the firms indicated that' they were not very anxious to underlake the work in the present state of the shipbuilding market.". All the above measures are taken in execution of the programme approved by Parliament.

Feople. The foreign commerce of the United States during 1912 was approximately $3,857,000,000 in value, and of this total American abipa carried but 10 per cent, or $340,000,000. The increase in our foreign trade in one year alone amounted to $600,000,000, or nearly double that amount carried under the American flag. Such is the horrifying condition of dependency of the United Staten foreign comm970s on the Eeas.
