A well-informed correspondent of the "Manolicstor Guardian" understands that & report which was recently prepared for the Japanese Government shows that the opening of the Panama Canal will, among other things, result in un increase of raw gotón im- ports from the United States and in a decrease of imports from Ia- dia. This will, moreover, enable Japan to place her cotton man- ufactures on the Indian market. at a lower figure than is possible at present, although the present out freights on the Kobe-Calcutta route are not likely to continuo much longer, while a somewhat similar development is expected to take place with Japanese cotton exports to China'as well as to the Pacific Islands. Another likely eliange which the now waterway. will bring aboat will be direct trading between Japan and the Atlantic coast of South America, Just now the goods, as a rule, come to London or Livorpool by way of Suez, and are then for warded to Brazil, Argentina, and the other States, but the Depart ment of Communicatione al Tokyo has under consideration a scheme for the establishment of a line by way of Panoma.

The output figures for the month Private HUMPHREYS (D.C.L.I.}.] of July make very antisfactory reading in most cases. In this connection, it is interesting 10 note the position of typical "young-producer" companies. For the purpose of a rough-and-ready comparison, we may point out that the average price of Plant- ation rubber for the first sever months of the current year is over 3/6 per lb.
Assuming
that the price for the remaining five months should only be the recent rate of about 2/8, the average for this whole of 1913 would be over 3/1. The coin- for 1012 pares with 4/104 - drop of 35
