Messrs. Samuel, Montagu & Co.'s wrookly circular dated Lon- don, January 4, states that, there is no continental domand for bar gold-the bulk of the £800,000 which arrived this weok will be sont into the Bank of England. -The amount roserved for Indio in £130,000. During the week tho not influx was £843,000. This week's P. & O sleamer will take at least £150,000 in sovereigns to India in addition to the usual shipment of bar gold.
The suminary of operations of the Royal Mint in 1011 just issued records an increase of the ooinage of sovereigns and half sovereigns, as follows:-

The New Your opens not un-j: favourably. The market has a broader aspect; some interest is being taken by the Continent as well as the Near and Far East. Though supplios are plentiful they do not overweigh the domand which exercisos a gentle prossura

"The fact that Shanghai im- ported 33,146,710 ounces of bar silver in 1911, and very substan tial amounts of British dollars werd taken by Hongkong, shows that the outlook in China is of apccial interest to the silver mar- kat.
"Consigaments of bar silver were on the water this wook both from this country to China and vice versa. On Tuesday £80,000 was shipped to that country, and to-day £55,000 was received from the same quarter.
The stock in Bombay in re duced by 400 to 12,800 bars, that in Shanghai is also led by the equivalent of about sleven lacs of taols. The offtako in Bombay has fallen from 80 to 70
bars a day.
"A shipment of £20,000 has been made from San Francisco to Hongkong.'
Mossra. Mocatta and Goldsmid'a wopkly circular dated London, January 5 states :-
The silver, market during the past week has shown a rising tondency and the price has ad- vanced from 25.1-16 quoted on the 30th ultimo to 25. 3-8, which is the rate to-day. This improvement becomes more marked in view of the New Year holidaye which were hold in India and China and on the Continent, olasing most markets for one or more days.
China has sent some good orders and the last two Currency Roturns from Calcutta showing a total decrease of 1.1-2 crores in the stock of rupees have no doubt encouraged speculative buying in the bazaars, besides which there have been some not anim-
portant Continental orders. At the present level the market -Beams fairly steady and likely to
move within narrow limits.
