Silk Production:
A belief obtained last spring amongst serioulturists and raw silk tradere generally that the production of raw silk this year would reach a total of 320,000 or 330,000 balos, creating a new re- cord, if the summer and autumn seasons brought an increased yield. This belief is now badly shaken, says the "Tokyo Asalii," and both the home and foreign traders who closed deals for forwards are experiencing great embarrassment. The result of the spring silk season was so entiafactory that

The summer season was fairly good, but the autumn, son- son proved a complete failure, so much so that it is now confidently believed that the production oan- not possibly reach even 300,000 bales. It is stated that the tumn silk in Tokaido, Kwansai and Kyushu came up to the nver- age yieldy but this first yield of antama silk in the Kwanto dis tricts, comprising Chiba, Ibaraki, Gumma and Saitama, did not reach 50, or 00 por cont, of the average, while the second yield also showed the same result. In Shinsku, the principul centre of the autumn silk, the result was very unsatisfactory.. In North Shinst the yield did not exueo 20 or 30 per cent. of the average, while an South Shinshu it was a complete failure owing to the eruption of Yakegi-dake. As a whole the autumn silk through- out the country Jell 70 or 80 "por ceat," below the averago your. Moreover the autumn silk which was offered for sale at 3.33 yen per kwomme was raised to-4.50 or 4.70 yen later. An impression obtains that the total production: this year will not exceed 270,000 or 280,000 bales.
