For the first time in the history of China trado there, has been a period of nearly six weeks in which the Chinose banks have had absolutely no transactions with foreign banks-excepting course, the paymeats made on amounts due on "chup" loans: In business wo find hore and there a fow purchases and de- liverios, although the total does not count for much. But the most extraordinary part of it is that it is the Chinese banks them- selves that havo not approached the foreign banks for a considor able time.
The nativo banks and mer chants, almost to a'mun in most of the provinces, are more or less interested in the success of the revolutionary movemont, which is bally in need of funds." They havo subscribed liberally, toward the funds, but it is clear that want of money; for one reason, anay lead to the collapse of the movement. A loan from tho foreign banks for the party as a whole is out of the question, buk indirectly the Chinowe might havò used their credit "advantageously if only they had carried on business as usual, and not played rovolution.
There is a grim humour in tho statomont made by the home) papers that there is no visible Gloot of the revolution in China; for the piocogoods trads of Gront "Britain with that country shows an advance for Octobar of over $450,000." All exports to China, according to the Board, of. Trade -returne, show an increase both in quantity and value. Statistics, in this instance, are surely no index of prosperity; on the con- trary, they are no small index of adversity. The merchants, here know what the increased exports to China during Sop- tember and October moun them, and the home manufac- turer should also fool alle pinch in the coming months whou no orders will go from China nutil. the present burden of stocke is liquidated.
10.
The merchants here are chock- ful of cargo, and will give a sigh of relief that there are to be no farther additions to their burdous at present. It took some time for theur, as for all of us, to learn the exact position in the Empiro, and then they arranged to stop ship ments. The coming weeks will són fower and fower arrivals of cargo, and even with reviving trade it must be some months be- foro we can revert to normal arrivals,
Like the home manufacturer, the shipping trade has not so far folt the effects of the revolution, but it will from now. Thi, East- ern shipping has been far from prosperous owing to competition and othor causes, and a few months of arrivals to Chins in ballast is not an experience which
