An Association Formed

With a view to asslating trade between Hongkong and Canton and also to raise money for tharitable purposes, an Associa *ciou of Merchants has been for

med in Hongkong, and we under- stand that so far considerable success lias attended the efforta made In conversation with prominent Chinese gentleman yesterday, we learnt thit this AB- sociation numbers sping bum- dreds of leading Chinese mer chants and gentry, and their work is not only confined to Hongkong and Canton, but to other ports in China. The Chair- man is Mr. Lau Chu Pak, and Fort Bayard-Per Dorro, 16th Dec, Mr. Tso Tsan Tai has been pointed secretary.

The Association is at present engaged in raising funds for the relief of the distressed people in the Yangtsze valley, which dis- tress has been caused by the.. civil war and the recent floods. We were given to understand that the people, are in a sorLy plight, ne the floods have been especially severe. It is proposed to send blankets, biscuits and Pother-necessities, and the lists are open to the European com munity as well as to the Chinese. The various charitable institu- tlons have been appronele 1, and already a goodly sum has been raised. A similar movement lias been started in Shanghai, and Swatow, Amoy and Shanghai-Per the intention is to co-opgute with those in the northern port, | Several institutions in Canton have also be approached, We feel eare that this most praise- worthy movement will have the support of the residents in Hong kong.
