The 'dock, which had been flooded during the high tides of the day before and had just been pumped out, was flooded again to preventDEAK the hoat from injuring the vex"... sol's hull and though it was ex- ceedingly difficult to locate the exact seat of the fire owing to the donse volnines of smoke pouring up the companionway, the large quantities of water poured into the vessel provented the flames from spreading and in a few hours all danger was over. Meanwhile the water in the tavcondecks was over three feet deep and this had to be got rid of as soon as possible. "All the cabins, bath-rooms and pantry in the 'zwoondeeks wore completely gusted ns-well-as-the smoke-room that is silunted at the head of the companionway but, strangely enough, the saloon immediately above escaped damage except for the scorching of the deck. The officers' quarters, which ure nft, suffered no damage.
