The question of anti-torpedo armaments is one that is attract- ing the attention of the naval'. authorities of ourly all naval nations. The great progress which has been mado during re- cent years in the development of the torpedo-boat destroyer has virtually evolved that typoof war vessel into a torpedo gunboat, so far as tonnage is concerned, with a speed vastly superior to any thing British torpodo craft, abovo destroyer type, has ever possessed. The larger vessels require a great deal more "stopping" than the earlier types, and it is doubtful if any of our light, quick-firing guns are sufficiently powerful of Chemselves to prevent such vessels as the "Swift" pressing home a torpedo attack made by a dushing' and determined comin.ander. British destroyers out of action, unloss by a lucky chance ono of the few undefended vital parts are hit.
