Grout Britain is showing rosentmont and sovoral notes have alroudly been exchang- ed on the subject. In addition the reciprocity arrangement is likely to be defeated by the imbroglio.

ALLEGED-KIDNAPPING.

* A Chinamang was cigargod at the Magistracy yesterday morning. with the allogod kidnapping of a girl six years of age. It appears that on the 20ti just, at about 11 o'clock, the defendant (wlio was a former lodger of the child's par- ents) took the child to drink ton in Canton Rond, Mangkok. They disappeared, and only yesterday the alleged kidnapper was mot by the girl's mother, who gave lin in charge. The girl' is still missing.

DEFERRED CABLES. Calcutta, February 2-It is understand that a schouin for "deferred" cables is under con- siloration for introduction be- tween India and Europe and other parts of the world. A molancholy tragedy occurred during the voyage of the Straits Steamship Company's vossel fpol from Pening to Singapore. Among the first-class passengers was a young foreigner, supposed to be German, named W. A. Weber. About two hours after leaving Penang, Weber was on the upper dock, which was almost desorted.
